It was placed there in 1961 when the Yutan Construction company, who had been contracted to improve the Stampede Trail into a usable paved road. They placed three buses out there to house the construction workers while the road was being put down. The project was abandoned 2 years later, and 2 of the buses were removed. They left one, the one McCandless would eventually die in, to serve as a shelter for hunters. That's how the bus got there...
